The life of a freelance web designer in Malta

Life Lessons 1 Comment

It’s been exactly 6 months since I left my full time job with Ascent Software and set my self on this venture. Just a few weeks ago I finished off reading The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho and it really boosted of my will to succeed and helped me out appreciate all that I’ve been through. I would recommend this book to anyone especially entrepreneurs out there willing to start a company or go freelance.

Being a freelance web designer has definitely helped me grow in many ways and today I’d like to share some of my experience with you.

Just like in a poker game in business you need to know what action you are going to take. You need to think how much it is worth taking a job and how will you maximise your opportunities. The first thing I tell consultancy customers is that unless you are there you wouldn’t get it! Networking and meeting new interesting people will help you a lot understanding this world; social groups like JCI or ToastMasters will definitely help you out! You also need to determine who is bluffing you or who is honestly interested in a mutually beneficial partnership; ultimately you need to learn to reduced the risks you’ll be facing. Some clients will try to squeeze you and sometimes you might feel like giving up but instead of desperation use that time  to improve where you went wrong and maybe think of new ventures.

Sometimes opportunity calls on separate paths than the one you’ve planned. Taking myself into example opportunity called to get myself an on-line marketing course. Thanks to this opportunity today I market myself on-line with a great efficiency. I used to be a hard core programmer and seemed to me that that was what I wanted to be. Nowadays marketing has really captured my attention and who knows … maybe  I’ll become a lawyer in the future, appreciate what you are and think of different opportunities. Tunnel vision in business is definitely a suicide call.

You need save enough money to cater for the days when it’s a bit dry but more over you need to invest to avoid these droughts. Marketing is expensive and will be more expensive if done incorrectly. You need to start learning quickly from mistakes and take actions rapidly. Without proper marking your venture  will end before it starts so think of it as an investment to further make more money. Learn to limit it to your needs too! Limit your investment in a way that if lost you still have at least another chance to try again.

You also need to be confident (people buy confidence) enough to convince the clients that you are better than your competitor. Some fall into the trap of following competitors rather than improving them selves and this is what you should avoid at all cost!

Make your competitors follow you and you will always be a step ahead ;)

I would love to hear your experience and your thoughts!!
